as I was going down the steps that leads to the lower part of the prom, an area where tourist have to go in order to get on the cruise ships. this guy pushed passed me , at the base of the steps there are 2 cops posted,, he paid one cop 5 pound and walked straight on no search of his bag and no id was shown to the cop, could have hidden anything in the carrier bag he was carrying, and Egypt is supposed to be on high alert after the suicide bomb in Alex, as I was walking past one of the small shops two men were playing dominoes one a Coptic the other a Muslim. come have some tea Mr Tony, the copt asked , we spent 10 minutes discussing the problem in Alexandria and what was in the today's paper. the Muslim was getting very agitated as most of my questions refereed to the Muslim sector. after a few minutes he said the problem is not between us and the Christian its us against the police, always the police are corrupt and not just these you see in the street, how much you think I pay for my shop and I do not mean tax. they say tax meaning rent to the council, even council is referred to as cancer. 1000 in the month and these bastards tell us not to hassle the tourist.

but my concern was this guy I saw giving the police money to enter the tourists area this walk goes all the way down the prom and he could have gone on to any one of the cruisers. just makes me feel angry about the corruption here,

every day now I see more beggars Luxor is rich pickings for these beggars normally a local would give 25 piestas, for that he can buy 5 pieces of bread; 50 piestas he can get a falafel, usually a coffee shop will give them a cup of tea, Nile water is free, but they come here after the tourist who in there stupidity give up to 50 egp. now when I give a beggar 25 piestas he will spit in my face, so I keep my money in my pocket, or when they say money I say "yes thank you, that really pisses them off, on the begging lark I will show what I saw from the roof restaurant,

butchers who were caught selling disguised donkey meat

Two Egyptian butchers who were caught selling disguised donkey meat told a court on Monday that they no regrets, as they had managed to put a smile on the faces of the poor.

The two butchers admitted to selling frozen cuts of dead donkey meat to the public as well as to big restaurants and hotels.

"I was doing the poor a huge service," Mohamed Mahmoud Khalifa told the court. "I can't describe how happy they were when they got the meat. Whole families started to eat meat."

Khalifa was caught red-handed on March 3 as he was skinning a dead donkey by a canal in Cairo. He later led police to the place where he stored large quantities of dead animal meat, which he packed and sold to wholesale suppliers, street vendors and well-known hotels and restaurants.

"I started with a dog. I cut off its head, skinned it, and put it in a frozen meat pack after adding lots of spices," Khalifa testified, saying the idea came to him when he noticed animal cadavers in canals and swamps.

Khalifa then recruited the second defendant, Wasfi Sawiris, to start selling the packaged meat.

"I told him I found an excellent source of profit. The business boomed, and the turnout among the poor was very high, especially since at the beginning we sold one kilo for 3 Egyptian Pounds."

Khalifa talked Sawiris into buying a big mincer and the two men began a brisk business selling the cut-price meat. They even managed to recruit someone from a big hotel and starting to supply hotels and restaurants with the tainted meat, he said.

Sawiris, who was arrested after hundreds of customers were seen swarming his store, said he sometimes felt badly about selling dead meat to people, but his intentions were good.

"I didn't want to deprive them from this joy that made them feel they're human," he said.

'This very rarely happens. It seems that the victim aggravated the shark or presented it with food, which caused a change in the shark's behaviour,' Amr Ali, the president of the Society for the Preservation of the Red Sea Environment, said.
Sharks are common in the area and tourists often take pictures, but attacks are rare.
The last person killed by a shark in Egypt was reportedly attacked while snorkelling near the Sinai resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in 2004.
Egypt's Environment Ministry is looking to set up a natural reserve for the sharks near Marsa Alam, where it already has a similar reserve for dolphins.

Officials in Egypt have tracked down the shark responsible for THREE attacks along its coastline – but will not kill it, it was revealed today.

Authorities in the resort of Nama Bay, Sharm el Sheikh, reported an adult oceanic white tip shark was responsible for injuring three Russian tourists in attacks during the last 24-hours.
The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism released a statement to all anxious British holidaymakers in the region yesterday.
They reported that they had tracked down the shark, but were trying to catch it and release it back into a remote area of the Gulf of Suez.
They added the resort – popular with thousands of Brits each year – had suspended all diving and water sports until Friday.
A statement read: “The MoT has announced that all beaches will be closed to the public and all water sports activities will be suspended until the end of the day tomorrow (2/12) along the whole of the Sharm el Sheikh coast.
“It has been reported that three Russian tourists have been attacked in three separate incidents in the last 24 hours in an area north of Nama Bay.
“The victims, one male and two females, are currently being treated in hospital.
“Officials from the South Sinai National Park have tracked down the shark in question – confirmed to be an adult oceanic white tip shark.
“The South Sinai National Park authority are currently attempting to capture the shark with the aim of releasing it back into the wild in a remote area in the Gulf of Suez.
“The chosen location will be in a safe distance from any tourist resorts in the Red Sea.”

(AP) An oceanic white tip shark badly mauled four Russian tourists swimming close to their beach hotels in two separate attacks at an Egyptian Red Sea resort, a local conservation official said on Wednesday.

Director of Sinai Conservation Mohammed Salem said the shark attacked two Russians swimming in the Ras Nasrani area near the famed Sharm el-Sheikh resort in the Sinai Peninsula and bit their arms off.

The same shark may also have been involved in an attack on another pair of Russians on Tuesday swimming close to the resort beach, he added.

The shark badly injured a middle-aged woman's legs and back and bit off her hand. She had a heart attack and had to be resucitated at the hospital.

The second victim, a 70-year-old woman was found with her right hand and left leg torn off.

Diving instructor Hassan Salem (no related to Mohammed Salem) said he was on a dive at the same time of the attack and was circled by the same shark before it went after the couple.

"I was able to scare the shark away by blowing bubbles in its face, but then saw it swim to a woman and bite her legs," he told The Associated Press.

Salem said the water turned red with the blood from the attack, and he rushed to take the diver he was training out of the water.

All four victims were flown to Cairo for medical treatment and were in critical condition.

A spokesman for the Russian embassy in Cairo confirmed that two Russians were attacked Tuesday, but he was only aware of a single Ukranian involved in a shark attack the following day. The discrepancy could not be immediately explained.

Mohammed Salem said coast guard authorities were hunting for the shark and have issued a warning for swimmers to stay out of the water in Sharm el-Sheikh, a famed scuba diving destination.

He said Egypt sees one to two fatal shark attacks a year and they increase as the number of tourists and swimmers in the water rises.

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- Egypt's largest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, will boycott runoff parliamentary elections scheduled for Sunday, a member of the party said Wednesday.
Mohamed Beltagy, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and a former legislative candidate, said the boycott is a protest against irregularities in the first round of voting last Sunday.
The party was wiped out Sunday, going from 88 seats in the legislature to zero.
Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party won 217 seats in the first round of voting, the semi-official Al-Ahram newspaper said.
The opposition parties won a mere handful of seats in the 508-seat parliament.
Twenty-seven candidates affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood qualified for runoff elections. Muslim Brotherhood candidates run as independents because the group is illegal under to Egyptian law, which bans parties based on religion.
The runoff will involve 377 candidates from the National Democratic Party of longtime President Hosni Mubarak.
On Tuesday, the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama criticized the elections, saying there had been "numerous reported irregularities" and "restrictions on basic freedoms."
National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer called the reports "worrying" and said the United States is "disappointed."
Critics had predicted that Sunday's race would be tainted by fraud and intimidation, but the government declared it "a success."
Egypt's official MENA news service reported that 6,000 members of 76 civil groups monitored the elections. The country rejected international monitoring of the vote as interference in its internal affairs.
Egyptian election commission spokesman Sameh al-Kashef said Tuesday that, although the committee had received numerous complaints, irregularities did not affect the results of the election.
The complaints included reports of riots, fraud and forgery, denying citizens their right to vote, and difficulties faced by the media. There were riots in 16 constituencies, he said.
He said voter turnout was 35 percent.

Various opposition groups have accused the ruling National Democratic Party of using its power to suppress voices critical of Mubarak's nearly three-decade rule. The ruling party has dismissed the accusations.

(AP) An oceanic white tip shark badly mauled four Russian tourists swimming close to their beach hotels in two separate attacks at an Egyptian Red Sea resort, a local conservation official said on Wednesday.

Director of Sinai Conservation Mohammed Salem said the shark attacked two Russians swimming in the Ras Nasrani area near the famed Sharm el-Sheikh resort in the Sinai Peninsula and bit their arms off.

The same shark may also have been involved in an attack on another pair of Russians on Tuesday swimming close to the resort beach, he added.

The shark badly injured a middle-aged woman's legs and back and bit off her hand. She had a heart attack and had to be resucitated at the hospital.

The second victim, a 70-year-old woman was found with her right hand and left leg torn off.

Diving instructor Hassan Salem (no related to Mohammed Salem) said he was on a dive at the same time of the attack and was circled by the same shark before it went after the couple.

"I was able to scare the shark away by blowing bubbles in its face, but then saw it swim to a woman and bite her legs," he told The Associated Press.

Salem said the water turned red with the blood from the attack, and he rushed to take the diver he was training out of the water.

All four victims were flown to Cairo for medical treatment and were in critical condition.

A spokesman for the Russian embassy in Cairo confirmed that two Russians were attacked Tuesday, but he was only aware of a single Ukranian involved in a shark attack the following day. The discrepancy could not be immediately explained.

Mohammed Salem said coast guard authorities were hunting for the shark and have issued a warning for swimmers to stay out of the water in Sharm el-Sheikh, a famed scuba diving destination.

He said Egypt sees one to two fatal shark attacks a year and they increase as the number of tourists and swimmers in the water rises.

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- Egypt's largest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, will boycott runoff parliamentary elections scheduled for Sunday, a member of the party said Wednesday.
Mohamed Beltagy, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and a former legislative candidate, said the boycott is a protest against irregularities in the first round of voting last Sunday.
The party was wiped out Sunday, going from 88 seats in the legislature to zero.
Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party won 217 seats in the first round of voting, the semi-official Al-Ahram newspaper said.
The opposition parties won a mere handful of seats in the 508-seat parliament.
Twenty-seven candidates affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood qualified for runoff elections. Muslim Brotherhood candidates run as independents because the group is illegal under to Egyptian law, which bans parties based on religion.
The runoff will involve 377 candidates from the National Democratic Party of longtime President Hosni Mubarak.
On Tuesday, the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama criticized the elections, saying there had been "numerous reported irregularities" and "restrictions on basic freedoms."
National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer called the reports "worrying" and said the United States is "disappointed."
Critics had predicted that Sunday's race would be tainted by fraud and intimidation, but the government declared it "a success."
Egypt's official MENA news service reported that 6,000 members of 76 civil groups monitored the elections. The country rejected international monitoring of the vote as interference in its internal affairs.
Egyptian election commission spokesman Sameh al-Kashef said Tuesday that, although the committee had received numerous complaints, irregularities did not affect the results of the election.
The complaints included reports of riots, fraud and forgery, denying citizens their right to vote, and difficulties faced by the media. There were riots in 16 constituencies, he said.
He said voter turnout was 35 percent.

Various opposition groups have accused the ruling National Democratic Party of using its power to suppress voices critical of Mubarak's nearly three-decade rule. The ruling party has dismissed the accusations.

Sheik mohamed told Awad to pay back 40.000 the next night they blackmailed me saying that they had put more assault charges in , and unless I take the new deal of 30,000. plus last weeks deal ,taking all the charges against Mustafa Ateia from luxor court the deal with you is off and I will not get anything. the papers in the court had already been signed that morning, then they changed the deal. what kind of a deal is that???
